VIP VISIT: Miles Templeman. of the Institute of Directors. with Shahid Sheikh, of Clifton Packaging, Leicester
One of the UK’s most influential business leaders has urged Leicester to shout louder about itself to the rest of the country.
Miles Templeman, director-general of the Institute of Directors, was speaking during a day-long tour of the city.
Speaking to about 40 business leaders at Clifton Packaging, in Meridian Business Park. near Braunstone, Mr Templeman said: “Leicester has much more to offer than I realised. There’s a PR job that you need to do.”
Mr Templeman praised Clifton Packaging’s entrepreneurial skill and innovation and the training available at De Montfort University, which he also visited.
He told the Mercury: “I think Leicester deserves a much higher reputation than it has. Most people’s impression of Leicester is fairly neutral, not particularly good or bad.
“Leicester needs to do a better job of communicating to the outside world.”
Mr Templeman said few people outside the East Midlands know Leicester is second to London when it comes to UK fashion design.
He said more should be done to highlight its leading position in the point-of-purchase (POP) sector, “In POP, it is very strong,” he said. “It’s the best in Europe.
“Leicester has got a lot of ambition. It needs to tell everyone about it. It will help everyone in this community if it does.”
